How did you decide the names of your children? Did you have family names that were important for you? Did you want a name with a meaning that resonated with you? Or maybe you had some names you simply liked? In Scripture we find some common motivations for names in ancient Hebrew culture. Some children were named in a descriptive way. For example, Esau means “hairy.” Others were named because their child was the fulfillment of prayer…Zechariah means “God has remembered.” So as we move through the timeline of the Bible and arrive at Jesus’ trial, we find a man named Barabbas. His name literally translates “son of the father.” There couldn’t be a more generic name for someone. And yet, here in this one name, we find the greatest of promises! Because The Son of The Father died for EVERY child of EVERY father! The incarceration of The Incarnation was the coronation of our salvation! In this message we will see how Barabbas’ name speaks to our ultimate need, his rescue speaks to our fundamental value, and his city speaks to our present suffering. As we have done throughout this series, this sermon identifies threads of prophetic imagery that the Holy Spirit has woven throughout Scripture. Let’s discover them together!
