“How Great is Our God”… “The Blessing”… “See a Victory”… These are the songs that top the charts on “positive, encouraging” Christian radio stations. And they fill our churches during weekend services. These songs are great! But what should we sing when we aren’t seeing victory or blessing? What do we say when we have doubts about how great our God really is? Though songs about loss, suffering, and grief are sparse on Christian radio, they make up 1 out of every 3 songs in the Psalms—the song book of the Bible. The fact that God gives so much space to grief in the Psalms informs more than just how we worship, it should also inform how we live. When we are suffering, God gives us permission to mourn. And not only that… He shows us how our mourning can be fruitful, how our mourning can be good.
