The year 2020 introduced us to all kinds of new words, phrases and terms: social distancing, flattening the curve, contact tracing, and more. In a year marked by these heavy words and phrases, we want to spend December returning to a word we all need to close this year: hope. The Bible’s definition of hope goes far far deeper than mere wishful thinking, and tonight we’ll dig into two images of hope that Isaiah gave the Israelites as they would wait generation after generation for the promised Messiah. They serve us equally well as we celebrate this 2020 Advent season of waiting and looking forward to Christmas.
