Great stories that captivate us aren’t always the ones about galaxies far far away or cosmic battles across multiverses. Sometimes what captivates us is witnessing the complicated process of a character’s growth as they go through universal experiences in life. How they endure, persevere, fight the battles inside their head, and ultimately overcome and grow makes up their character development. The question is – when the story of your life is complete, will there be significant character development? Because if we take our call to follow Christ and live like him seriously, that will necessitate some serious character development! Christ’s command to “be perfect” in the Sermon on the Mount is almost paralyzing in its demand, but how can it be a catalyst for character growth in light of the rest of the Sermon on the Mount? We’ll dig into that as we dig into Matthew 5!
