John 21 is another example of one aspect of the text can overshadow everything else…and we understand why. There are some story lines in a certain text that are so compelling it is hard to see anything else. John 21 is no different. Peter is arguably the leader of the 12 disciples aside from Jesus. And yet he is the one who denies Jesus…three times! And yes, even after Jesus warned him! His restored relationship to Jesus and Jesus’ mission in John 21 is absolutely compelling. Then in Acts we read that Peter gives the first sermon for what would become the Church of Jerusalem…and 3,000 people come to faith in Jesus! So looking back at John 21 after having read all of Acts and the rest of the New Testament, we can appreciate why the story line of Peter’s restoration and his conversation with Jesus overshadows everything else. And yet, there is more for us to see, to understand, to consider. That is tonight’s message in this series exploring Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances during the first 40 Days following His death and resurrection. And what we are going to see is that right here in John 21 we have an incredible model for what the local church should look like…so let me ask you, will you be one of the six for the sake of the one?
