This is the final week in our series for what some might refer to in academic circles as spiritual formation. If we were to use Biblical language, I prefer the phrase we find in 2 Peter 1:4, “to share his divine nature.” I fear that in too many Christian communities, discipleship has become religious intellectualism. The emphasis on doctrine has completely displaced the conversation about virtues and deeds. Right doctrine is paramount to Christianity but so are virtues and the deeds. Believing as Jesus believed or living as Jesus lived is a false choice…let’s reach for both! In tonight’s message we finally introduce the phrase that has been part of our church for many years: If I accept The One, then I must obey The Six. And to obey The Six I must walk The Twelve. When I walk in The Twelve, I become The Twenty-four…and then Godly deeds will flow from my life. If that phrase is new to you, then you’ll want to listen to this message! Then we will spend the remainder of our time discussing what I call “virtue blockers.” Even if I give myself fully to the 1-6-12-24 process so that good, Godly deeds can flow from my life, let’s be wise regarding seven encumbrances that inhibit the flourishing of virtues in our lives. So glad you have tracked with this series…and don’t forget the notes are always attached as a PDF to each message here online for your convenience!
