How is a church supposed to respond to someone who professes to be a Christian but is living blatantly and boastfully in opposition to Biblical morality? For many of us, we have either been the victim of church discipline that has been done poorly or church discipline that has been applied unfairly. I believe this is a driving motivation for the Holy Spirit in including the story of The Corinthian Man who was married to his stepmother in the texts of both 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians. God wanted us to know how to use church discipline in a way that it is always intended to be restorative and never punitive. In this message I share two factors Paul identifies as justification for church discipline and also three key elements that must be present before church discipline can be healthy and rightly motivated. Too many modern churches have reversed what the first century church practiced. Today we shun the unbeliever for not living according to Christian values, and we make allowances for the Christian who blatantly disregards Biblical morality. If Paul were here today, he would say we have become terribly backwards. And if you believe Hebrews 12 that tells us we live out our lives before a great cloud of witnesses…then maybe that’s Paul we hear shouting at us now!
