Absalom wasn’t much of a “good guy.” He killed his own brother and led an uprising against his father, David. And yet, David was able to love and forgive him. One of the most difficult commands in the Bible is Jesus’ command to love our enemies. When we see ourselves as the protagonists of our own stories, it’s hard to seek reconciliation with all of our antagonists. But in this relationship between David and Absalom, we learn what it looks like to love an enemy. We learn how to turn our antagonists into protagonists for the sake of God’s glorious story of reconciliation.
