I have worked through Romans 10:9-14 many times while preaching throughout the years. But in reflection, my sermons have always been teaching about the theological implications of these incredible verses and defining the theological terms found therein. Tonight, I want to explore what I believe Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is communicating to us experientially. Meaning, how does my life experience change when embrace a life in devotion to Jesus? On our annual summer vacation which includes a trip to Lake Gaston on the border of Virginia and North Carolina, I was sitting on the dock one afternoon watching all the boats ride by pulling kids on tubes, wakeboards, skis, and wake surf boards. And I felt a gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit saying, “that’s it.” I wasn’t thinking about preaching or praying or doing anything some would consider spiritual…but I was…I was resting, one the lost and forgotten spiritual disciplines so often taught in Scripture. And immediately I understood what the Holy Spirit was saying…that picture, that image of being pulled behind the boat, that’s life with Jesus, tethered to Him. I hope this message helps you better understand what happens when you experience Romans 10:9-14, when you hear about Jesus, when you believe in Jesus, when you confess that belief, and ultimately decide to live in His wake, allowing Him to set the course for your life forever tethered to Jesus.
