Some of the most memorable stories in Scripture happened at a table. Some of the most hopeful promises in Scripture show us the image of a table. Some of the most urgent warnings in Scripture about the allure of sin speak of a table. Our very nature longs for affirmation and acceptance, not because we are weak or needy but by God’s design. And we will seek out that affirmation and acceptance wherever we can find it so let’s make sure that people in the 757 can find it here! In this sermon we talk about understanding the difference between the inclusivity of the Christian message and the exclusivity of the Christina life. We must not conflate the two. The invitation to the table should be as it was for Jesus, for all. And there are assigned seats at the table; where people are sitting should remind us what to expect. We should not expect the same thing from the guest as we do the host…and at some point we all need to move from just attending and take up the work of hosting! But regardless of our seat, all of us have something to offer when it comes to the work of table, the cost of the table, and the hospitality of the table. Christianity began at a table, in an upper room where Jesus told us He was about to give His life as a sacrifice for many. We cannot separate Christianity from the imagery of the table. May the table we build keep saying to everyone who comes, there is a seat for you at this table!
